Kevin Donahue

Husband. Father. Backpacker. Pilgrim. Author.

In 2019, Kevin Donahue set off from his home in the United States to begin a pilgrimage journey spanning both years and miles, walking across continents to the ancient end of the world, to kneel at the tombs of eight Apostles. His story is a first-hand account of the people and places he would find along the way to inspire questions and enlighten answers about faith, hope, and love.

As I shouldered my pack and stepped out into the bright sunshine of a Florida morning, the significance of the moment was unmistakable: I was beginning.

The preceding months had been filled with training walks, days spent poring over guidebooks, and hours upon hours of repacking my pack. As a backpacker, I was as prepared as I knew how to be. But for this journey I would be walking as a pilgrim, and a worrisome feeling of unpreparedness lingered. Despite months of soul-searching, even as I was departing I was still grasping for the words to define my purpose. More than just a shortfall in my vocabulary, I was at a loss to understand my own need for making a pilgrimage.

I grew up in a Protestant Methodist home, anchored by a weekly routine of Bible school and church service. However, like many in my generation, years and miles had loosened my bonds to the physical church. While I still felt a connection to my Christianity, my faith was perhaps better described – to borrow the words of author Timothy Egan – as “lapsed but listening.”

So it was from my front door that I began: a somewhat reluctant pilgrim leaving with all that I am to seek all that I may find.
